<img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2496/3677830676_1d01370e81_m.jpg" alt="Kirsten Patterson, Owner - Faces"" title="Rosacea: Symptoms and treatment" />

Rosacea is a chronic condition that affects the skin and sometimes the eyes. Around 14 million people in the US suffer from rosacea. Its symptoms include flushing of the face, usually on the cheeks, chin, and around the nose, which is sometimes accompanied by a tingling or burning sensation. Over time, rosacea may cause the affected skin to become thicker. Men suffering from rosacea tend also to develop a swollen, “bumpy” nose, a condition called rhinophyma.

As well as the general type of rosacea, there’s also a type of rosacea called acne rosacea. Individuals suffering from acne rosacea display the same symptoms as rosacea sufferers, but with the addition of papules and pustules. These are small bumps under the skin, similar to the pimples commonly associated with acne, but these differ in that there is no “head” to them and they are more solid than the spots and pimples acne sufferers develop, and will sometimes feel sore and painful when touched.

There is presently no known cure for rosacea or acne rosacea. It’s not known what causes the condition. Some doctors believe that it’s the result of blood vessels expanding too quickly, while others think it is caused by bacteria in the skin. Some medical experts also believe that the condition is inherited and brought on by certain momentous life events.

With no cure, sufferers must learn how best to control their condition. As it’s believed that certain factors such as extreme temperatures, spicy foods and drinks, and emotional stress worsen rosacea, some sufferers find that simply avoiding these is enough to control their condition. Other sufferers use a very mild skin cleansing regimen, one that incorporates a specific rosacea cleanser, combined with green tinted base make-up to tone down the red appearance of their skin. Some sufferers, however, need to use topical metronidazole (in the form of a gel that’s applied to the skin) to help with combating the redness and bumps associated with acne rosacea. For more severe forms of acne rosacea, oral antibiotics are prescribed. Tetracycline is an antibiotic that’s been found to be effective as an acne rosacea treatment, especially in reducing the inflammation of the skin, which is usually associated with the more severe types of this condition.

Rosacea can also affect the eyes, a condition known as ocular rosacea. Ocular rosacea can make the eyes feel sore and “gritty.” Oral antibiotics are usually effective in treating this condition. However, sometimes a doctor will prescribe antibiotic eye drops if needed.

As rosacea is a chronic condition, which means that it’s long lasting, sufferers need to find the most suitable rosacea treatment to help control their symptoms.

There are several types of acne and all of them are not a sight to behold for some. Acne can be a real nuisance, especially if covers your face. Aside from what you know as pimples it would also be a good idea acquaint yourself with acne lesions so that you can take proper action once you they start to appear. Acne vulgaris is a certain type of pimple much like whiteheads, blackheads, papules, nodules, pustules and cysts.

Whiteheads are white bumps that start to appear on your face whenever oil, dead skin cells and bacteria are trapped in your pores. These are the ones that you would be tempted to pop. Popping a whitehead is sometimes unnecessary since they disappear quickly and have short life spans. They are also referred to as “closed comedones”.

If you see reddish and inflamed bumps, they are papules, another kind of acne vulagris. This acne has no head so you cannot just pop them out. Squeezing papules is not an option. Doing so can cause scarring and can lead to infection.

Acne that is similar to the characteristics of a whitehead is a pustule. You would notice a circular and reddish flesh that surrounds the head. The head would usually have a yellowish or whitish center. Pustules can be squeezed out, just be sure to have professionals do that for you.

A more severe case of acne vulgaris is the appearance of cysts and nodules. Nodules one acne types that is thought of as the most difficult to treat. It can take up to one to three months before it could completely disappear. These are large bumps that can lead to scarring. This kind of lesion should not be popped out at any cost because they can cause serious skin damage. If it gets infected it would take longer for it to heal.

The gruesome version of a nodule is a cyst. Aside from the reddish flesh that surrounds its head, it also contains pus. Cysts are large acne that have a diameter of around 5mm. These are the painful type of acne and can cause serious infection when squeezed out by a non-professional. At the first appearance of cysts or nodules, it would be best to consult your dermatologist so that swelling and scarring can be prevented.

Acne vulgaris is one of the most common skin disorder affecting susceptible hair follicles, most commonly found on the neck, upper trunk, and face. It is described by comedones (which are primary lesions of acne) that are both open and closed, and by cysts, nodules, pustules, and papules.Causes of Acne VulgarisThe primary lesions of acne are comedones. Closed comedones (whiteheads) are obstructive lesions formed from impacted lipids or oils and keratin that plug the dilated follicle. They are small, whitish papules with minute follicular openings that generally cannot be seen. These closed comedones may evolve into open comedones, in which the contents of the ducts are in open communication with the external environment. The color of open comedones (blackheads) results not from dirt, but from an accumulation of lipid, bacterial, and epithelial debris.Although the exact cause is unknown, some closed comedones may rupture, resulting in an inflammatory reaction caused by leakage of follicular contents (e.g., sebum, keratin, bacteria) into the dermis. This inflammatory response may result form the action of certain bacteria, such as proprionibacterium acnes, that live in the hair follicles and break down the triglycerides of the sebum into free fatty acids and glycerin. The resultant inflammation is seen clinically as erythematous papules, inflammatory pustules, and inflammatory cysts. Mild papules and cysts drain and heal on their own without treatment. Deeper papules and cysts may result in scarring of the skin. Acne is usually graded as mild, moderate, or severe, based on the number and type of lesions (e.g., comedones, papules, pustules, cysts). The goals of management of acne are to reduce bacterial colonies, decrease sebaceous gland activity, prevent the follicles from becoming plugged, reduce inflammation, combat secondary infection, minimize scarring, and eliminate factors that predispose the person to acne. The therapeutic regimen depends on the type of lesion.
There is no predictable cure for acne vulgaris, but combinations of therapies are available that can effectively control its activity.

Dealing with acne rosacea can be frustrating and uncomfortable. You may find yourself dealing with redness or even with pustules; however, there are a variety of things you can do at home to calm your rosacea and prevent further flare ups. Without having to spend any money at all, there are various home remedies and preventive measures that you can take to keep your rosacea under control.Chamomile Treatments: This one of most important herbal ingredient which is known for its effectivity to assuage the severity of rosacea. The miraculous soothing effect of this home remedy efficiently alleviates the affected skin, minimizing the inflammation and some other symptoms of this skin disease. Take a handful of pure chamomile or a few chamomile tea bags and pour them in a pan containing 3 cups of boiling water. After 10 minutes separate the liquid part and keep it in freezer. Afterwards whenever you need a cold compress, dip a piece of cotton cloth in the chilled chamomile and apply it on the affected skin area until you get relief. However this treatment might impose some side effects for those patients who are allergic to ragweed.Zinc – the use of zinc in curing acne is becoming more popular in the field of nutrition and wellness nowadays. After showcasing impressive results in some acne cases, more and more people are now taking in zinc in therapeutic dosages of 50 mg one to three times daily. Try this daily for a month and then reduce the dose to 25 mg a day. Stop using it if you get undesirable side effects.Garlic – Contrary to common conception, the use of garlic is indeed one of the most effective ways to treat facial blemishes. By rubbing raw garlic on the affected area several times a day, it acts like an acne cleanser and you can achieve clearer skin in a short period of time.

When my friend Sid was small he used to get pimples. His brothers used to get acne pimples as well but they were lucky because their acne used to disappear quickly. He was the unlucky one because he used to get a new one almost every other day. Everyone told him that once he will reach the age of 25 they will go away, and they did but unfortunately he contracted with rosacea, i.e. adult acne.

He used to get patchy-redness and sudden flushing all the time, sometimes he had a pimple or two but his skin used to remain oily all the time. He used to wash his face every couple of hours with medicated soap but his face used to get oily very quickly.

The problem was that he didn’t even realize that he had rosacea for the first few years until his skin specialist diagnosed him with rosacea. He became self-conscious and used to avoid gatherings. He tried many different treatments and medicines antibiotics, Retin-A you name it he tried it including herbal treatments. Even used gram flour and orange peel, which his grandma prepared and forced him to used but nothing worked for him.

First I had Acne and now adult acne, what is the problem with me? The question he used to ask himself and to everyone else almost everyday for which the answer we still don’t know.

He tried different creams and changed his skin specialist again and
again to find the right one. But unfortunately nothing and no one could help him. This is because what causes rosacea is still unknown. It is still a mystery even for some doctors that which rosacea treatment is actually right for someone who has rosacea. It’s not that treatments do not work with rosacea, some treatments work well, but which one is the right one is a million dollar question.

Until one day when his mum’s ever increasing criticism became unbearable he stopped using soap, drinking more water and he started washing his face only with warm water. In his own words the first 3 weeks were terrible for him. He could not go out, he could not face anyone. I think it was just his imagination that he looked awful but after that his face accepted water and the oiliness of his face started to decline. It took about 2 months before his face started to remain dry and he got rid of oiliness.

The flushing was still the big problem for him. Even though he promised himself that he will not used any new treatment but a sudden flare-up still made him look around for treatments. Then he discovered Jojoba Oil, which was a turning point and a true-life saver for him, that’s what he says about the oil. It took about a week before his face actually accepted the oil. The best thing was the application of Jojoba oil was simple, just warm water a drop of pure jojoba oil every morning and evening and his face redness started to decline. Nowadays he doesn’t get sudden flare-ups.

I hope that some people who are suffering from acne rosacea, if increase the use of water and use jojoba oil instead of experimenting on new medicated soaps and creams then they might help them with their rosacea problem.

Are you suffering from acne? Or it is rosacea? Well, rosacea is often mistaken for acne. But there is a difference. Rosacea is a disease which is more common in adults wherein acne is more prominent among the teens. Acne can attack you on face, back or body while rosacea generally attacks flushing zone of your face.

If you have small, pus filled bumps or pustules on your nose, cheeks, chin or forehead, it could be rosacea. Rosacea is more common in the age group of 30 to 50 and also termed as adult acne or acne rosacea. This skin disorder is not a threat to your life but it can severely affect your whole personality and disturb your mental setup.

To identify this disease, you need to watch out for the following symptoms:

1. a bulbous nose

2. red pustules or bumps on the face, cheeks , nose, chin and sometimes on the forehead

3. burning sensation in the eyes

4. Frequent flushing or blushing.

Presence of any of these mark rosacea. The condition is cyclic in nature and generally re-appears after some weeks of its evasion. The precise reasons for its occurrence are not known. However, several assumptions have been made in this regard. Some people believe that acne rosacea is because of a disorder in the blood vessels, bacterial infections or extreme sun burns.

Genetics and environmental factors are also identified as the factors causing to rosacea. But here we should be aware of the fact that alcohol is not a reason for the occurrence of rosacea. Though, it could certainly flare up your skin condition. Some of the other reasons that might aggravate your rosacea are:

hot or spicy foods

extremely high or low weather conditions

hard strenuous exercising

high temperament can also flare up your skin

So it is advisable to take proper diet to cure your rosacea.

The medical treatment of the patient depends upon the severity of condition. Usually antibiotics are suggested to the patients as a first line of medication. They could be either the oral ones in the form of pills or topical gels. The medication usually continues for around 2 weeks and the patient begins to show results. Oral medications can then be stopped but one may be asked to continue the use of gels. While for the severe cases surgery could also be required.

All in all, it is always recommendable to meet the dermatologist for treating your adult acne.

Acne rosacea is a skin condition characterized by reddish discoloration of the facial skin, particularly in the area of the cheeks, forehead and the nose. It is usually found in fair skinned adults, and is often mistaken for acne. The tiny blood vessels under the skin dilate and give the appearance of “blushing”. While pimples may occur with acne rosacea there are no whiteheads or blackheads. At first the redness may come and go, but if untreated it will continue to worsen, with pimples and permanent flushing of the face. Extreme cases of acne rosacea that have not been treated can lead to disfigurement of the nose and puffy cheeks. Cosmetic surgery is the only way to repair this severe damage. Acne rosacea may also cause a gritty feeling in the eyes that, if not treated, can lead to impaired vision.

Acne rosacea can occur in men or women. Women tend to get acne rosacea more often than men, but men have more severe symptoms than do women.

Causes of Acne Rosacea

One of the most frustrating things about acne rosacea is that there is no known cause. There are many suggestion as to the origins of rosacea such as:

- Emotional factors that cause blushing or flushing of the face may trigger acne rosacea.
- Changes in the weather may cause acne rosacea to occur.
- Sun exposure generally worsens the condition.
- Mites or certain bacteria may cause the initial outbreaks of acne rosacea.
- Some medications for heart conditions that are used a vasodilator may bring about the onset of acne rosacea.

Treatments Available

It is important to remember that acne rosacea is not the same as teenage acne, and will not respond to over the counter acne treatments. These treatments are more likely to further irritate the skin and cause a worsening of the condition.

The most successful treatment of acne rosacea includes:

- A strong oral antibiotic that gradually decreases to a maintenance level.
- A topical cream that is applied regularly to the affected area. This cream usually will contain antibiotics in conjunction with cortisone or a prescription acne mediation.

Things to avoid/moderate

- Minimize skin exposure to the sun.
- Avoid or minimize smoking
- Moderate alcohol consumption
- Avoid spicy foods

As promised – you now know what acne rosacea is, what causes this condition and how it can be treated/controlled.

Severe acne can affect many facets of a person’s life, causing a great deal of embarrassment and stress. Severe acne may significantly limit one’s social life and even interfere with opportunities for employment. They are extremely disfiguring and can cause psychological effects on the sufferer. Five types of severe acne acne conglobata , acne fulminans , gram negative folliculitis , nodulocystic acne and Pyoderma faciale. Acne conglobata is a chronic and severe form of acne vulgaris (common acne). It is usually characterized by deep abscesses, severe inflammation, severe damage to the skin, scarring, blackheads are usually conspicuous and widespread. It often appears on the face, chest, back, thighs, upper arms and buttocks. It usually affects those whose age is between 18-30 years old.

Acne fulminans is a sudden onset of highly hurtful inflammation. It appears suddenly in a person with inflammatory acne. Symptoms of severe acne nodulocystic, often ulcerating acne, aching joints and fever are apparent. A person who develops acne fulminans may have had unsuccessful treatment for another form of severe acne, acne conglobata. Another types of Acne gram-negative folliculitis. Gram-negative folliculitis is a complication of abused and long- term use of antibiotic. Patients with this type of acne are usually treated with accutane since it is known to be effective against gram- negative bacteria. Pyoderma faciale is the type of acne that affects females mainly belonging to the 20-40 age groups. Physical methods and prescription medications that dermatologists use to treat severe acne

Antibiotic gels and lotions are applied directly onto the skin (eg, Clindatec, Eryacne, Dalacin). Isotretinoin is the usual treatment of choice for acne conglobata. Isotretinoin is a synthetic (man-made) retinoid (form of vitamin A) that comes in pill form. It is usually taken once or twice a day for 16 to 20 weeks. Corticosteroids or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications may be given to reduce inflammation. Nodulocystic acne usually requires an aggressive treatment regimen that may include isotretinoin and antibiotics, or intralesional corticosteroids that “melt” the cyst over a period of 3 to 5 days. Spironolactone anti hypertensive drug has anti androgenic activities and can be used by both males and females to treat severe acne. Oral contraceptives have been shown to effectively clear acne in women.

Beautiful skin sounds great isn’t it? Are you aware of the fact that various factors help in reducing the natural shine of the skin and lead to different skin diseases?

Acne vulgaris is a common skin problem found amongst women and adolescents. It is caused when tiny hair follicles on the face and body are clogged and turn into painful lesions on the surface of the skin and below.

There are few myths about acne that it is caused due to dirt, grime, stress, excessive use of cosmetics, poor hygiene but it is not true. Factors such as hormones, extra oil production in the body, bacteria or inflammation or uneven skin shedding.

One of the effective skin treatments for acne is benzaclin gel that contains clindamycin phosphate and benzoyl peroxide. It is usually applied over the acne prone skin surface whereby it helps in reducing the growth of acne causing bacteria.

There could be certain short-term side effects of this drug such as redness of skin, dry skin, itching or peeling of skin. However, if these prevail for a long term, then it becomes necessary to visit the physician.

There is some other variety of treatment depending upon the type of acne such as whiteheads or blackheads. Creams such as renova, retin-a also work but it should be remembered that while starting the therapy, some of the skin types may face skin irritation or sunburn.

Some of the medications kill the bacteria on the skin and the pores and gradually by time, they decrease the acne breakouts and inflammation. Oral antibiotics may also be prescribed along with topical treatment depending upon the factor that how severe the acne is.

Accutane is also a treatment for severe types of acne. However, in case you undergo any type of treatment it is important to be patient as it takes time to recover from severe acne vulgaris.

Sooner or later, aging starts to take its toll on skin, no matter how well we all have moisturized and protected and pampered ourselves. Losing skin elasticity and that supple, smooth texture we enjoyed in our twenties and thirties gives way to fine wrinkles, creases, and yes, even the dreaded age spots. Those age spots are known as melasma, and while they certainly aren’t harmful, they do cause frustration and annoyance in those who develop patches of it on their face and hands.

Melasma is the result of an increase in pigmentation in various areas of the body, occurring mostly on the face, the back of the hands, forearms and shoulders. More women than men suffer occasional patches, and it is often prevalent in those of Native American and German or Russian descent. These dark, irregular patches appear on the upper cheeks, nose, lips, and between the nose and lips, as well as the forehead of many people after they hit that 40-year old mark, and may take months, or even years, to develop.

The darkened patches of skin are believed to be caused by hormones that produce melanin pigments in places where the skin is exposed to sunlight, and women who spent much of their youth sunbathing can expect to develop melasma later on in life. However, women who live in hot, dry areas, and have light brown or olive toned skin are much more likely to develop melasma than others, so it’s best to protect the skin with appropriate clothing and to always wear a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 year round.

Sometimes, people with thyroid problems also experience melasma, and stress is also a factor in the development of this skin condition. For others, allergic reactions to foods, medications or cosmetics are the main culprit.

To help reduce the appearance of these darker patches of skin, many people use topical pigment reducing or skin bleaching products such as hydroquinone, also known as HQ, which prevents the creation of an enzyme that is used to produce melanin. Another product, known as Tretinoin, is an acid that increases skin cell rejuvenation.

Another product, called Azelaic acid, is believed to inhibit the cells that create melanin. Facial peels with alpha hydroxy acids are also commonly used, or chemical peels that contain glycolic acid.

Teen acne is certainly not uncommon, since almost 90 percent of teenagers are affected with it in one way or another. Not only does it affect a teen going through adolescence physically, many teens feel as though having acne affects their self-esteem.

The reason teens are so susceptible to getting acne is that their bodies are going through many changes. At the beginning of adolescence, or puberty, the body starts to produce hormones called androgens. Boy and girls get these hormones at the beginning of development; however, boys tend to get more of it, resulting in more breakouts.

The body is covered with thousands of pores, or hair follicles. At the base of the follicles are oil glands that produce sebum, and can act as a layer to protect the skin from the environment as well as keeping it moist and healthy. When hormones start up, oil glands start producing more oil and mix together with old skin on the bodys surface. When oil and dead skin mix together, they start plugging up the pores and trapping oil and bacteria within the skin. Despite being filled with oil, the body will continue to produce more, and the pore becomes swollen or inflamed. White blood cells attack the inflammation, which in turn cause the red blemishes known as pimples.

Despite acne being so common in teenagers, adults often find themselves affected by it as well. Not only can it affect the self-esteem of a teenager, but adults can suffer from physical or psychological scars as well. Adult acne is more likely to cause permanent acne scars, since the skin is aged and often has less collagen.

Since doctors are now realizing that acne does not just affect teenagers, they are coming up with more ways to treat and fight acne. More adults are seeking treatment for acne, and public awareness is increasing on the issue.

A skin disorder called Rosacea is often mistaken for acne in adults. This disorder affects adults between the ages of 30 and 60, and can look similar to acne symptoms with redness, oily skin surface and a bumpy appearance. Many other skin disorders may have a few similar symptoms to acne, so it is always important to be checked by a dermatologist to make sure. When some skin conditions are left untreated, they can often grow worse or more painful.

Despite what is often heard, acne is not caused by a lack of hygiene. In fact, over- scrubbing the skin can actually make acne worse, since the body will continue to secrete oils to replace the amount scrubbed off. Another common misconception is that diet causes acne. If certain foods seem to cause breakouts in particular individuals, avoiding them may be a good option. Acne can be caused by stress or depression, since it puts extra pressure on the body. It can affect the way people look, and the way they feel about themselves, leaving permanent scars, both physically and mentally.
